Summertime is in full swing, and the weather here in Calgary has been beautiful, to say the least.
When I think back on my childhood, summer meant No School (of course) but it meant being out doors...all the time.
I can remember my mom driving up and down the road (I grew up in rural Newfoundland) calling out my name. And Summer meant more daylight, so why, at the age of 8, do I need to be home when the sun is still shining at 9:30pm??
All us kids would hide, and hide me, so I wouldn't have to leave. We had a great game of dodgeball going in Bell Powers meadow, and we couldn't stop now?!?
When I was growing up, we watched 1 hour of cartoons in the morning, during the summer, and that was it. We went outside to play, and rarely came home for lunch. Plus we would only be home long enough to hoover our supper, and gone outside again. Because we all knew what was approaching fast......Back to School...ugh
This day in age the kids are all about video games and youtube. They actually watch Youtube videos of other people playing video games...Huh? Our kids are on time limits, then they must go outside and play for a certain amount of time in order to earn more gaming time.
Many times my kids come back saying no one is at the park to play with. And I wonder...are all the kids home gaming or watching Youtube?
We spend all our summer at our lake place. Yup they still have game/youtube time...I mean they are kids and it's 2018. But only first thing in the morning and an hour before they go to bed, unless we watch a movie which normally we do. The rest of the time? You got it, outside.
They play at the park, we take them to the pool, life 6 times a day, and we go to the lake. We pack food and make the afternoon out of it. Last week I took them strawberry picking, and they said it was the best day ever! See the simple things matter to them.
When I pack our food when we go down to the lake for the afternoon here are my tips:
Get a cooler. This will do it's job - keep things cool
Make finger sandwiches! Cut the crusts off their favorite sandwiches, and cut them in finger length/width strips! They always think that's fun
Pack juice and water. They are kids so they can have some juice. But ALWAYS have water...remember the 2 bunnies system, Water first!
Cut veggies (the second part of the bunny system. Want to know more? Pop me an email ) I cut carrots, peppers, cucumbers, broccoli and cauliflower. When they are available kids will eat them.
And lastly, but my favorite, is pack a treat. When the kids (and adults) know there is a treat coming, they will eat the healthy items first. So don't give in to the whining parents. They will get over it!
My favorite thing to make? Energy balls of course! Click the pic for the recipe!
So that my friends is the end of my email. I do hope you take something away from this and enjoy the recipe!
