I never really thought about that question too much growing up or raising my daughters. I just ate like I always did and how everyone around me ate.
It wasn't until just 4 years ago I really started to get in tune with my body.
See, I lost 60 lbs back in 2001 with the popular points program. It was great don't get me wrong, however, the aspect of learning how to eat and to listen to how my body feels after I ate, well that was never explained or even talked about in the weekly meetings.
It wasn't until I started putting back on that weight that I had lost and feeling so sick, I'm talking buckle over pains, indigestion, heart burn, belly fat, fatigue and heavy periods, that I realized that something was not right.
My eating habits stayed the same as they were back in 2001, but something was different. Like I talk about in my Welcome Page I went through A LOT of tests, including removing of my gallbladder, and allergy testing, even an endoscopy to check for celiac. But nothing showed in the tests so my doctors said "I don't know what to do" and left it at that. But instead of me going into this, go back to my Welcome page and read about it there :)
But I learned something from my experience that I want to share with you...as it just may be what you are searching for!
So let me ask you these questions:
Through trial and error (a lot of error) and then studying nutrition and how the body reacts to certain foods, have TOTALLY changed my life! I was able to heal my gut issues including the horrible digestion I had, plus started losing weight again (and I'm almost 41!) and my hormones balanced out, and now I am the healthiest I have ever been! Yes there are some days I have flare ups but that is always a work in progress.
So what was wrong you ask?
I learned I am very carb sensitive and I have insulin resistance!
When you have a sensitivity to carbs, you body processes them very fast. This causes a spike in blood glucose. Then your pancreas secretes insulin to lower the glucose level back to what should be normal.
The issue here is that the hormone, insulin, is a storage hormone. So the glucose we do not use, well gets stored as fat, usually around our belly area.
Then with the thanks of insulin, our glucose level drops, causing our brains to think we are hungry, and we crave and eat more carby foods. But our bodies haven't even used the glucose from before as fuel so now it all gets stored at fat.
So let me ask you this:
Hate to break it to ya...but you may be carb sensitive
There are a lot of things to factor in here when dealing with carb sensitivity. If you are type 2 diabetic or insulin resistant, how fast you digest food, your stress level and good ol' genes (ever find yourself thinking...I have hips like mom?!?) All these things play a factor into how to handle this and your susceptibility of actually having this sensitivity.
So now you are thinking...well what can I do?
First things first - you must re-evaluate the foods to consume. Cut out (or down as much as possible) all those white foods, like rice, bread, pastries, sugar etc.
This information was VITAL to me turning the pages of my health journey, to break through and learn to listen to what my body was telling me.
So this is the EXACT approach I use with clients and to hear and see their excitement when things finally start shifting for the better, is priceless. They now learn how to control their cravings, and they don't feel they need to reach for the candy bar or coffee just to get through the day. Their energy is amazing , they are sleeping way better, and those stubborn pounds are finally melting away.
I am known as the "body translator" to my clients. I am able to get to the root of issues and translate to them what their bodies are trying to say!
