When I was in my 20’s and following the infamous “point system” weight loss program, it was focused on the least amount of points for your food – so more “bang for your points” .
I ate frozen yogurt thinking it was the healthiest option! I mean this is what the TV tells us, my doctor told me I was too fat so cut out eating fat, and the ladies teaching us our regular Saturday Meetings after weigh in said this is a great option because to at the amount you get for the least amount of points!
Well let’s look at the ingredients shall we….
Modified Milk Ingredients, Sugar, Red Cherries (Cherries, Glucose-Fructose, Water, Natural Flavour, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Colour) Glucose, Cream, Skim Milk Powder, Mono and Diglycerides, Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Natural Flavour, Bacterial Culture, Colour. May Contain Pits. May contain peanuts and/or other nuts. (Chapmans Frozen Yogurt - Chapmans.com)
So they have Sugar listed there, however glucose-fructose and glucose (there again?!?) they are all sugars as well! So the first 3 ingredients – SUGAR!
And then there is “modified milk ingredients” – So processed milk. Huh….Imagine that! Milk also has lactose which is sugar as well!
“The scary thing is, since it technically isn’t a sugar (in the chemical world), it doesn’t have to be listed as a sugar.”
It makes me sad when the people we go to for help with our health, like our Doctors, are all misinformed about nutrition.
So the next time you grab something that you assume is “healthy”, really look at the ingredients, ask questions, heck pop me an email if you are looking for a healthy alternative for meals/snacks!
Remember, getting your balance back starts at the table,
